Dissociation between Categorization and Induction Early in Development: Evidence for Similarity-Based Induction

چکیده

The goal of the current research is to examine mechanisms underlying induction early in development. Artificial categories were created in which the appearance of items could be pitted against category membership. Children between 4 and 5 years of age participated in two types of tasks: categorization and induction. Although participants readily classified items based on category membership, they ignored category membership during induction, and instead based their responses on the appearance of items. These results support the idea that early in development induction is

When looks are everything: appearance similarity versus kind information in early induction.

The goal of this research was to examine mechanisms underlying early induction--specifically, the relation between induction and categorization. Some researchers argue that even early in development, induction is based on category-membership information, whereas others argue that early induction is based primarily on similarity. Children 4 and 5 years of age participated in two types of tasks: ...

Effects of Category Labels on Induction and Visual Processing: Support or Interference?

Linguistic labels have been demonstrated to promote inductive generalizations even early in development, however, the mechanism by which labels contribute to induction remains unknown. According to one theoretical position, even young children, realize that labels denote categories. Therefore, labels enable categorization of presented entities, and thus contribute to category-based induction. A...

Linguistic labels: conceptual markers or object features?

Linguistic labels affect inductive generalization; however, the mechanism underlying these effects remains unclear. According to one similarity-based model, SINC (similarity, induction, naming, and categorization), early in development labels are features of objects contributing to the overall similarity of compared entities, with early induction being similarity based. If this is the case, the...

When induction meets memory: evidence for gradual transition from similarity-based to category-based induction.

The ability to perform induction appears early; however, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Some argue that early induction is category based, whereas others suggest that early induction is similarity based. Category- and similarity-based induction should result in different memory traces and thus in different memory accuracy. Performing induction resulted in low memory accuracy in adults an...

Similarity and categorisation: getting dissociations in perspective

Dissociations between similarity and categorization have constituted critical counter-evidence to the view that categorization is similarity-based. However, there have been difficulties in replicating such dissociations. This paper reports three experiments. The first provides evidence of a double dissociation between similarity and categorization. The second and third show that by asking parti...
